About me

Hello and welcome. My name is Max Novelli.
Well... my full name is Massimiliano, but, in my everyday life, I go by Max.

I spent the first 30 years of my life in a small town just outside Milano, Italy.
At the age of 30, I moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
For my 50th birthday, I gave to myself an unusual present:
I accepted a new job in Copenhagen, Denmark.

It was an unexpected decision, but one of the best in my life.
I do love Copenhagen and its life style. I do enjoy to be back in Europe, its diversity, its history and how everything is close together and accessible.

I'm a software engineer, a data enthusiast, a yogi, a yoga teacher, a movement enthusiast, a pacifist, and an environment lover.

I do not own a car. My feet, my bikes and public transportation take me where I need to go.
I love dear friends, good food, traveling and exercising.

Peace and respect for all.

IT and data

I am a software engineer, data architect, and data manager with a Laurea degree from Politecnico di Milano, Italy.

I currently works as Data Curation Scientist at the Copenhagen office of the European Spallation Source.

My latest interests are Big Data, its management, structure, visualization, and curation, specificly applied to research data. In my current position, I am working on the catalog system for the scientific data and leading the effort to establish a well-defined set of metadata to describe such datasets under the FAIR principles. I also lead R&D projects spanning from data visualization to query results scoring, focusing on translating them into viable production tools.

My passion is in developing visual tools to explore data structure and to assess the integrity of complex experimental data as well as using neural networks and machine learning to further study and prove specific experimental results. I have been collaborating with the National Institutes of Health and the SPARC initiative to review and provide feedback on online tools, data policies and formats.

When I am not lost in "computer land", I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I like to spend my free time biking, running, hiking, swimming, walking (better on the beach), cross-country skiing, eating good food, sipping good wines, and drinking good espresso. I also invest a considerable amount of energy in practicing, teaching, and experimenting with yoga and body movement. Lately, I discovered rock climbing and paddle boarding.

Yoga and more

Yoga found me in 2001 and I’m still with it to these days.

After many years of mountain biking and working sitting at a desk, my knees were in need of lots of care. Physical therapists suggested to try yoga, so, shortly after, I found myself in a class at my local gym. For six months, I kept asking myself why I was showing up at those classes, then something clicked, the planets aligned and I started to feel better, more aware and better able to focus. I was hooked.
Thanks to many friends and teachers, my practice has continued through the years and improved since I started.

In 2013, driven by my never ending curiosity, I attended a 200hrs yoga teacher training. I just wanted to better my practice, but I discovered another passion of my life: teaching yoga.

My practice and my teaching are a strength and aligned based flow with a lot of exploration and contamination from other disciplines. I like to challenge and to be challenged by my students.

I teach yoga only few times a week, so I have the time to recharge and practice, although my yoga self is always with me.

Since the pandemic, I started to explore outside the constraints of the math. I found the movement practice. With so many teacher and material, I'm in exploring everything that attracts my attention and sorting out what resonates with me. Everytime I can, I go for one of my exploration practices in the area where I live.
The latest addition to my movement skills is a beginners class for circus aerial: trapeze and silk.
